Automation Engineer at System1 Biosciences

System1 Biosciences is revolutionizing drug discovery for brain disorders by combining biotechnology, neuroscience, robotics, and machine learning techniques. We employ AI-driven phenotypic screening to discover novel drugs for complex neurological and psychiatric disorders such as epilepsy, autism, and schizophrenia.

We’re building a world-class high-throughput cell culture, microscopy, and bioassay platform through integrating standard and custom proprietary robotic systems.

This role is for a core member of our robotic automation team. You’ll participate in team-wide projects as well as lead the design and delivery of independent initiatives.

All candidates must have:

  • BS/MS or equivalent in a scientific or engineering discipline with 2+ years of experience working in laboratory automation for the biotechnology/biopharmaceutical industry
  • Hands-on experience with system integration and laboratory equipment such as automated liquid handlers, robotic arms, plate readers, imaging platforms, LC-MS, etc.
  • A track record of working with scientists to develop and optimize assays for high throughput environments
  • A passion for troubleshooting hardware, software, and assay problems
  • Initiative, curiosity, a deep desire to learn and a problem-solving attitude
  • High personal standards of reliability and a track record of driving projects to completion
  • The ability to work full-time hours in our San Francisco office, working closely with colleagues from many technical areas

The work we do needs diverse perspectives and a variety of skills and approaches. Our ideal candidates will have some of the following:

  • Experience in leading new technology evaluation by establishing plans and coordinating with stakeholders
  • Experience with custom hardware design and using 3D CAD packages such as Solidworks
  • Familiarity with commercial robotic integration platforms such as Green Button Go, Momentum, Overlord, Genera, Cellario, etc.
  • Familiarity with engineering programming frameworks such as Python, .NET, µManager, LabVIEW
  • Familiarity with design control, code review and best practices in software development
  • Software development abilities relevant to process automation, e.g., developing instrument drivers, customizing integration platforms, developing software tools to aid researchers, etc.
  • Experience in a fast-paced startup environment and the ability to deal well with ambiguity and act with autonomy
